Nathalie Dumont is a Melbourne-based fibre artist whose multidisciplinary background in architecture and graphic design deeply informs her artistic practice. A graduate of Melbourne University and RMIT, Nathalie has seamlessly transitioned her understanding of design principles into the realm of visual arts. Her fascination with the fabrication processes—spanning furniture, interior design, and textiles—has culminated in her innovative use of fibre as her main creative medium.
Nathalie's work reimagines familiar material, like cotton thread, transforming it into vibrant, painted-like surfaces that challenge the conventional boundaries of textile art. This technique involves a full body repetitive process that allows Nathalie to completely immerse herself in the creation of her pieces. Through this action, this is where she finds her daily meditative practice.
With this unique technique, she explores themes of colour association and perception, socio-environmental ideas, and our relationship to nature. With her new body of work making observations about the increasingly desaturated landscapes of our built environment. Her art seeks to reignite the liveliness lost in modern urban spaces, posing critical reflections on the impact of diminished colour on modern, urban living.
Her debut solo exhibition, ‘Terra Technicolour’, which was in May 2024, invited viewers into a world where the vibrancy of nature is woven back into the fabric of urban life. Advocating for a reinvigorated appreciation of colour's essential role in enhancing our collective wellbeing.
